Merle came to us as an 8 month old calf, he’s now 2 years old and looking more like a bull as the days go by. Every morning I make my coffee and head out to check on the cattle, shouting “Morning Merle” and without fail Merle will look up, from wherever he is, and reply with a long bellow. Merle is a Speckle Park and the boss of the herd. Merle had an unbelievable start to his life here on the homestead; upon arrival he proceeded to break through 3 fences and the next day was found on the other side of a large river running with another herd. I spoke to the owner and it was decided that he would be retrieved whenever they next bring in their cattle, no harm done.. that however, would not be necessary as that very night at around 1am, I heard an incredible amount of bellowing coming from my cattle. I went to check on them and to my disbelief, there was Merle! He had swum back across the river (upstream), climbed a ridiculously steep hill that he had previously fallen down and broken back through the three fences. Needless to say, myself and all of my neighbours are still in awe of how he managed it. That was enough adventure for him, he has happily stayed home every day since.
